Kenneth Dowdy, 43, was dressed in all black and trying to pry open an apartment door at 233 Avenue B in Bayonne when he was confronted by a building resident around 7:25 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, police said.
"A witness then saw the actor enter the passenger seat of a vehicle that was parked nearby, which was being driven by a ‘heavy-set” female," police said in a release.
The getaway driver was later identified as April Sanders, 50, of Jersey City.
Bayonne police arrived at the scene and saw multiple pry marks on the door and door jam, consistent with someone trying to make entry to the apartment.
An investigation by the Bayonne Police Department Detective Bureau led Detectives to the area of Madison Avenue in Jersey City, where they encountered the parked and unoccupied suspect vehicle at approximately 9:15 a.m. The vehicle was impounded a short time later for being used during the commission of a crime.
Further surveillance of the area led to detectives encountering the suspects at the corner of Madison and Clinton Avenues.
Dowdy and Sanders were subsequently placed under arrest just after 11 a.m. Both were found with drug paraphernalia, police said.
Dowdy and Sanders were transported to Bayonne Police Headquarters where they were charged, Dowdy with Criminal Attempt Burglary, Possession of Burglar’s Tools, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Sanders was charged with Conspiracy to Commit Burglary and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Dowdy was lodged in the Hudson County Correctional Center and Sanders was released on a summons.
